BIO
Contemporary painter Kaylie Pendleton was born in Ventura, CA (2000) and currently lives in New York City. She received her BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2022. With rich oil paint, Kaylie experiments with purposeful blurring techniques leading to an aura or dream-like effect mixing with reality. Through often contrasting and bold palettes, her oil paintings evoke yearning, memory, and romanticism of modern day. Kaylie lost her right eye to cancer at two years old and as a result color, contrast, light, and shadow is how she experiences the world with less depth perception. Her vibrant palettes are often heightened and saturated versions of her perspective. She was most recently a part of Santa Paula Museum of Art’s exhibition, 30 under 30.

Artist statement
I focus on women’s experiences and the unique connections between them. Exploring the unseen moments that often have not been depicted of women, by a woman, before this century as a conscious act.
With a background in illustration and publishing, I have always been drawn to stories of humanity. Before painting became my primary outlet, I designed and illustrated book covers, finding deep fulfillment in bringing the stories of others to life.
My creative process begins with digital sketching and painting on my iPad to develop ideas and compositions before any paint touches the canvas. While my flow state happens in the solitude of my studio, I find endless inspiration for new work within the vibrant energy of New York City.
In my current series, I reimagine classic narratives through modern color palettes and a feminist perspective. I am interested in the candid, minute emotions of women as seen through the female gaze, offering an alternative to the limited depictions historically presented in museums and galleries.
